The term dissociative describes a range of experiences characterized by disruptions in awareness, memory, identity, emotion, perception, and behavior. It is often the brain's way of coping with overwhelming stress or trauma, creating a mental distance from an experience to protect itself. Think of it as a psychological "escape hatch."

Dissociation can manifest in many ways. Mild forms include feeling "spaced out," losing track of time, or experiencing derealization—the sense that the world around you isn't quite real or is dreamlike. Another common experience is depersonalization, where you feel detached from your own thoughts, body, or emotions, as if you're observing yourself from the outside. More severe dissociation can involve significant gaps in memory, such as forgetting important personal information or entire traumatic events (known as dissociative amnesia). In complex cases, it can involve Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), where a person develops distinct identity states to navigate different aspects of their life or trauma.

The word is most frequently used within the fields of psychology and psychiatry to describe dissociative symptoms and disorders, including Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder and dissociative amnesia (and related conditions). However, the underlying concept of a separation within experience can be found in literature, art, and everyday life. A soldier returning from war might exhibit dissociative symptoms as they struggle to process their experiences. An artist might even use dissociation as a creative tool, exploring fragmented perspectives and surreal imagery. While we all drift off into our thoughts occasionally, dissociative describes a more profound disconnection—a sense that parts of your experience of being "you" are no longer fully linked together.
