To disaggregate means to separate something into its constituent parts or components for individual analysis. Think of it as undoing an aggregation – taking things that have been combined and pulling them apart again. The word comes from the Latin dis- (meaning "apart") and aggregare ("to gather").

While you might disaggregate a physical object like the mosaic example above, it's most commonly used in more abstract contexts, particularly with data analysis. Economists might disaggregate national income figures to understand spending patterns by different sectors. Researchers might disaggregate survey responses to identify trends within specific demographic groups. Marketers will disaggregate customer data to create targeted advertising campaigns.

The key is that disaggregation isn't just about separating things; it's about doing so in order to gain a deeper understanding of the individual elements and their relationships to the whole. It allows you to move beyond broad generalizations and uncover hidden patterns or nuances.
