A diffuser is something that spreads out or disperses something—most often light, air, scent, or sound. It takes a concentrated stream and spreads it over a wider area, reducing intensity and creating a softer, more even effect.

The concept of diffusion itself comes from physics, describing how particles spread out in space. But the word "diffuser" is used in many contexts. A photographic diffuser softens harsh light for portraits or product shots. An aromatherapy diffuser uses reeds or ultrasonic vibrations to release essential oils into the air, creating a calming atmosphere.

In buildings, an air diffuser is the part of a heating or cooling system that spreads airflow through a room. In hair care, a diffuser attachment on a hair dryer spreads the air so it dries curls with less blasting and less frizz. In sound and music spaces, an acoustic diffuser is a wall or ceiling surface designed to scatter sound, making a room feel less “echoey” or harsh. In cars, a rear diffuser is a shaped panel under the back of the vehicle that guides airflow to help with stability.

People also use the word in a looser, metaphorical way. Someone who steps in calmly during an argument can be described as a diffuser—someone who helps tensions spread out and settle down instead of building up in one spot.
