Aromatherapy is a holistic wellness approach that uses natural plant extracts – most commonly essential oils – to support psychological and physical well-being. The practice dates back thousands of years, with evidence found in ancient Egypt, China, and India, where fragrant plants were used for medicinal and ritualistic purposes.

The term "aromatherapy" itself is relatively modern and is often credited to French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in the early 20th century, popularized through stories involving his use of lavender oil after a laboratory burn. Today, aromatherapy encompasses various techniques, including inhalation (using diffusers or steam), topical application (massaging oils into the skin – always diluted with a carrier oil!), and, more controversially, internal use (which should only be considered under qualified clinical supervision).

Essential oils aren't just pleasant scents; they contain complex chemical compounds that can affect sensory experience and may influence mood and perceived stress. For example, lavender is often used for relaxation, peppermint is commonly used for a cooling, clearing sensation (including for headaches), and tea tree oil is valued for its antimicrobial properties in topical products.

Aromatherapy isn't a cure-all, but it's increasingly recognized as a complementary therapy that can support overall health. You might encounter it in spas offering aromatherapy massages, hospitals using essential oils to reduce patient anxiety, or simply individuals diffusing calming scents at home to create a more relaxing environment. It's important to note that while generally safe, essential oils are potent and should be used responsibly with proper knowledge and precautions.
