It's a formal note of disapproval, not usually a heavy punishment by itself. In schools or the military, demerits were used to track minor rule breaks. In everyday talk, people can also use it for a clear weakness or downside. A movie with a weak ending might get a demerit from a critic, just as a sloppy team report might get one for poor organization.

A demerit is a fault, drawback, or small penalty recorded against a person for a lesser offense or poor performance. It is a formal way of marking something as below standard. The term is often linked with systems such as schools or military units, where repeated minor offenses—being late, breaking small rules, careless errors—could add up and bring bigger consequences, like extra duties or disciplinary action.

Over time, its meaning has narrowed to the idea of a negative point, the opposite of "merit" (a reason for praise or credit). Today, you can still see it used in official systems, and also in everyday language as a general downside. A politician might face public demerits for a controversial statement, or an athlete might take a hit to their record after a failed drug test.

A demerit is usually less serious than a full punishment on its own, but several demerits together can affect trust, reputation, or opportunities. Whether in a classroom ledger, a workplace review, or public opinion, it signals something that lowers how a person, action, or choice is judged.
