Pronunciation

US

  • /dɪˈfɔlt/

Description

Imagine you're ordering pizza online. The website asks what kind of crust you want. If you don't make a choice, it automatically selects "regular"—that's the default! A default is essentially a pre-set option or standard setting used when no other preference is specified.

But "default" has another meaning, too. It can describe failing to fulfill an obligation, like not paying back a loan. When someone defaults on a debt, they've broken their agreement and missed required payments. Think of it as falling back to a basic state—whether that's a setting on your computer or a missed financial obligation. For example, a computer program might default to English if you don't choose another language, or a team member might default to taking notes during meetings simply because no one else volunteers.
