A decal is a single design that can be transferred onto a surface such as metal, glass, wood, plastic, or ceramic. While often thought of as stickers, decals are usually made to look more "built in"—as if the design was painted or printed directly onto the object. Think about the detailed patterns and logos on decorated mugs or plates, or the tiny markings on model kits.

The process involves printing an image onto a special transfer paper. To apply a traditional water-slide decal, you usually soak the paper in water to loosen the design, carefully position it on the desired surface, and then gently slide the backing away. The design is then pressed down to remove air bubbles and left to dry, leaving the image adhered to the object. Modern versions, like vinyl decals for cars, might use a dry adhesive, but they maintain that "seamless" look.

Historically, decals were popular for decorating china and pottery, allowing manufacturers to add elaborate patterns without hand-painting each piece. Today, they're used in a wide range of applications—from model building and customizing vehicles to adding decorative touches to walls and furniture. You might see them as window clings, product labels, or part of larger graphic designs (and the idea is similar to a temporary tattoo, even if we don't usually call that a "decal").
