The word "curtain" most commonly refers to a piece of fabric hung in front of a window to block light, provide privacy, or add decoration. You might choose sheer curtains for a soft glow, blackout curtains for a dark room, or patterned curtains to brighten up a space. "She drew the curtains and settled in with a book."

But "curtain" extends far beyond windowsills. It can also refer to other hanging covers, like a shower curtain, or a divider hung in a doorway or between parts of a room. In theatre, a curtain is the fabric that separates the stage from the audience. Raising the curtain signals the start of a performance, while lowering it marks its end. This theatrical association has given rise to figurative uses of the word.

To "bring down the curtain on" something means to bring it to an end—like saying, "The company decided to bring down the curtain on their failing project." By contrast, to "draw a curtain over" (or "draw a veil over") something suggests hiding it from view or choosing not to talk about it.

"Curtain" can also describe something that looks like a hanging sheet. A "curtain of rain" is a heavy wall of rain that blocks your view. You might also hear about a curtain of smoke or dust.

Historically, curtains were also used as room dividers in castles and large homes, offering privacy within expansive spaces. The famous phrase "Iron Curtain," coined during the Cold War, referred not to fabric, but to the ideological and physical boundary dividing Europe into Eastern and Western blocs—a metaphorical curtain separating two worlds.

So whether it's blocking sunlight, framing a stage, or signifying an ending, "curtain" is a word that evokes images of concealment, division, and transition—a barrier between what's seen and unseen, what begins and ends.
