Corporatist can describe a person, policy, or system that supports corporatism, or that works in a corporatist way. The core idea is that society is organized into major groups—such as business associations, labor unions, and sometimes farming or professional groups—and that these groups are brought into government decision-making. Instead of leaving everything to open market competition or constant class conflict, a corporatist system tries to manage the economy through structured bargaining among these organized interests.

Historically, corporatist ideas grew in Europe as a response to problems people saw in both laissez-faire capitalism and revolutionary socialism. Fascist Italy under Mussolini is often cited as an early, well-known example. But corporatist-style arrangements have also appeared in democratic settings—often called “social partnership” or “neo-corporatism”—where governments, unions, and employer groups negotiate national wage deals, labor rules, or economic plans. In that context, the aim is usually stability: fewer strikes, fewer sudden policy swings, and a predictable path for growth.

In modern political debate, corporatist is frequently used in a more critical way. It can point to a close, comfortable relationship between large companies and the state—through lobbying, campaign money, revolving-door jobs, or direct influence on regulators. In that sense, the worry is that rules get written to help a specific industry rather than the public.

You might hear someone say "the healthcare system is increasingly corporatist," meaning that insurance companies and pharmaceutical corporations have a disproportionate influence on healthcare policy, potentially at the expense of patient access or affordability. Or you could describe a political climate as "corporatist" if powerful business interests seem to dictate government agendas.

It helps to separate two ideas that people sometimes mix up. In a strict, political-science sense, corporatist points to a structured role for organized groups (business and labor, especially) in making policy. In looser everyday use, corporatist can mean “too friendly to big business.” Both uses show up, so the safest move is to read the tone and context: is the speaker describing a formal bargaining system, or complaining about business influence over government?
