A constrictor is anything that squeezes or compresses something else—think of a snake wrapping tightly around its prey! But it doesn't just apply to animals. A tight belt can act like a constrictor, making it hard to breathe. The word comes from the Latin constringere, meaning "to draw together." You might say a strict budget is a constrictor on your spending habits, or that bureaucracy can be a constrictor on innovation. It implies a forceful restriction of movement, flow, or growth.

The word "constrictor" immediately brings to mind powerful snakes like boas and pythons—creatures famous for subduing their prey not with venom, but by grabbing on, coiling around it, and squeezing until it can no longer get enough air (and, in many cases, until blood flow is cut off). In your body, some muscles are literally called constrictors because they tighten and narrow a passage (for example, muscles in the throat that help you swallow). In engineering, a constrictor (such as a narrowed section or plate in a pipe) can be used to control fluid flow by reducing the opening.
