Imagine water flowing through a pipe. Some pipes are wide open, allowing lots of water to rush through—that's high conductance! Others are narrow or blocked, restricting the flow—that is low conductance.
In science and engineering, the most common use is for *electricity: it tells you how easily electric current can flow through a wire or a part in a circuit. High conductance means the path lets current pass easily; low conductance means it holds the current back (like high resistance). You may also see the same idea with heat*, when we talk about how easily heat moves through a material.
Now and then, people borrow the word as a figure of speech for being “open” to ideas, but that use is informal and much less common than the technical one.
Conductance is a measure of how easily something transmits or allows the flow of energy or other quantities. While most frequently associated with physics—particularly electricity and heat transfer—the concept can be extended to describe how effectively any "current" moves through a system.
In *electric circuits, conductance (often written as G) is the mathematical inverse of resistance (R): G = 1/R. High conductance means low resistance, and low conductance means high resistance. We measure electrical conductance in siemens (S)*.
It helps to separate two closely related ideas: - *Conductance describes a particular object or path* (a specific wire, resistor, or connection) and depends on its shape and size. - *Conductivity describes a material* (like copper or rubber) and does not depend on the object’s dimensions.
So a short, thick copper wire tends to have high conductance because copper allows electrons to move easily, while an insulating material like rubber has very low conductance.
The term also appears outside pure electricity. *Thermal conductance describes how easily heat passes through an object (for example, a metal spoon warming up in a hot drink). In some fields, you may also hear about conductance for fluid or gas flow*, meaning how easily a pipe, channel, or tube lets a fluid pass.
Occasionally, people use "conductance" in a loose, figurative way—talking about how easily ideas or influence “flow” through a person or group. That meaning is not standard in everyday English, but it follows the same basic picture: fewer barriers means easier flow.
