Computation, at its core, is the process of using rules or instructions to transform information. While we often associate it with mathematical calculations—like solving equations, finding averages, or creating complex models—the concept extends far beyond numbers.

Historically, computation was a purely human endeavor. Ancient astronomers performed painstaking computations by hand to track celestial movements. Now, "computation" often refers specifically to what computers do: processing data according to algorithms—step-by-step instructions that tell the computer exactly what to do.

However, it's important to remember that computation isn't limited to machines. In a broad sense, a chef following a recipe can be thought of as doing a kind of computation: they take ingredients (input) and follow rules (the recipe) to create a dish (output). Likewise, when someone improvises music, they're making real-time choices based on patterns and rules they've learned.

In fields like biology and cognitive science, "computation" is used to describe how living systems process information—from the way neurons fire in your brain to how plants respond to sunlight. The term "computational thinking" refers to a problem-solving approach that involves breaking down complex problems into smaller steps, identifying patterns, and designing algorithms.

So, whether it's a simple arithmetic sum, a complex computer program, or the workings of the natural world, computation is about taking information, applying rules, and arriving at a result—a fundamental process underlying much of our experience.
