Compression refers to the act of reducing the volume of something by applying force, or the state of being squeezed into a smaller space. It's a surprisingly versatile word with applications in many different fields!

Physically, think about how a spring compresses when you push on it, or how layers of sediment compress under immense weight over time to form coal or sedimentary rock. In engineering, compression is crucial for the operation of internal combustion engines – they compress air (and in many engines, a fuel-air mix) before ignition.

In medicine and sports, you’ll also hear about compression garments or compression bandages, which apply steady pressure to help with swelling and support.

But compression isn't limited to physical objects. In computer science, file compression reduces the size of digital files so they take up less storage space and can be transferred more quickly (for example, when you “zip” a folder). There’s also audio and video compression, which shrink media files so they’re easier to store and stream.

The word comes from the Latin "comprimere," meaning "to press together." It's often used to describe a process of making something denser, tighter, or more concise. A writer might compress a lengthy argument into a single, powerful paragraph.
