The term "coiner" originally referred to someone who made coins—a person responsible for minting currency. Over time, it developed a secondary meaning: a person who coins (creates) new words or phrases. In this sense, a coiner deliberately invents language that did not exist before.

Unlike slang, which often appears naturally in daily conversations, a coiner consciously crafts language. They might do this when no existing word fits a new idea, to bring poetic life to writing, or just out of playful creativity. Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, was a famous literary coiner and is known for playful inventions like "chortle" and "galumph."

While many attempted coinages fade into obscurity, successful ones become integrated into the language, enriching our ability to communicate. A word doesn't need to be officially recognized by dictionaries to be considered coined; it simply needs to be a novel expression brought into use. The act of coining is often associated with writers, poets, and thinkers who push the boundaries of language.

So, while a historical coiner shaped metal into currency, a modern coiner shapes words into meaning—a subtle but powerful form of creation.
