A clue is a piece of information that helps solve a problem, answer a question, or understand something that is unclear. It acts like a breadcrumb trail leading you toward the truth. Interestingly, clue comes from an older spelling, clew, meaning “a ball of thread”—the kind of thread that helps someone find their way out of a maze. That image of a guiding thread still fits the modern meaning.

You most often hear about clues in the context of mysteries or investigations. Detectives search for clues at crime scenes, such as footprints, fingerprints, or witness statements. However, clues are not limited to criminal cases. A subtle hint from a friend might be a clue that they are keeping a secret, or a change in a colleague's behavior could be a clue that something is wrong.
