We most often hear "cluck" as the sound a hen makes—that familiar cluck-cluck echoing around the farmyard! But "cluck" isn't only for chickens. It can also describe the small, repeated sound people make with the tongue or throat to show mild disapproval, sympathy, or concern—much like a mother hen clucking protectively over her chicks. You might see an aunt clucking over a messy room, or hear someone cluck in disbelief at a bit of bad news. It's a versatile word that bridges the gap between animal behavior and human habits.

"Cluck" is most famously known as the vocalization made by chickens—that distinctive, throaty sound they use to communicate. While we often think of the sound itself, the verb form captures the action perfectly: "The hen clucked softly as she led her chicks through the grass."

Beyond the barnyard, "cluck" has found a home in human interaction. As a verb, it can describe expressing disapproval, concern, or gentle scolding, often accompanied by a repeated clicking sound of the tongue against the roof of the mouth (or a small, throaty sound). You might imagine a grandmother clucking her tongue in disbelief upon hearing a piece of scandalous news.

Informally, it can also be used figuratively for a group of people chatting away—especially if the talk feels fussy, repetitive, or hen-like—evoking the image of birds pecking and chattering among themselves: "The group was clucking away over tea and biscuits, dissecting the events of the weekend."
