To call someone "classless" usually has nothing to do with their bank account—it is about their behavior. It describes someone who lacks good manners, good taste, or basic consideration for others. Imagine a person loudly bragging about their wealth at a funeral, or cutting in line without a word of apology; those are classic examples of classless behavior.

The word implies a disregard for basic social norms. While someone might intentionally reject these rules as an act of rebellion, "classless" almost always carries a negative sting, suggesting poor judgment or a lack of self-awareness. However, the word also has a neutral (sometimes even positive) side: it can describe a "classless society," where no one is ranked by birth or wealth, or a "classless" item—like a pair of blue jeans—that looks just as right on a billionaire as it does on a student.

"Classless" is a versatile word that most often describes a lack of refinement, good taste, or social grace. In everyday use, it is used to criticize behavior seen as rude, insensitive, or tactless. Crucially, in this insulting sense, it is not a commentary on someone's socioeconomic background: a person with great wealth can act classlessly just as easily as anyone else. It suggests a failure to understand or respect the social cues and expectations that help people live together smoothly. Beyond the realm of insults, "classless" has a formal, sociological meaning. It describes a system or society that has no social classes at all—an egalitarian ideal where no person is considered "above" another. In this context, being classless is a goal of many political ideologies.

The word can also be applied to style and design. When an object is described as "classless," it often means it is not strongly associated with a particular social class, so it feels broadly acceptable rather than flashy, shabby, or trying too hard. A "classless car," for instance, is one that avoids looking either "cheap" or "pretentious," fitting in anywhere from a farm to a five-star hotel. Historically, the term could point more directly to one's station in life, but in modern everyday speech it is more often a judgment of behavior and taste. Whether used to condemn a rude gesture or to describe a society without social-class divisions, "classless" is ultimately about what happens when class boundaries (in one sense or the other) disappear—or are ignored.
