Celluloid is an old, flammable plastic made from cellulose nitrate and camphor. Invented in the 1860s, it was one of the first thermoplastic materials—meaning it could be repeatedly softened by heating and hardened by cooling. This malleability made it incredibly versatile for its time. For decades, celluloid was used to manufacture a wide range of products: from spectacle frames and toothbrush handles to decorative items like combs, pen barrels, and even ping-pong balls!

However, celluloid's biggest claim to fame lies in the world of cinema. From the late 19th century until the 1950s, most motion picture film used a cellulose nitrate base (nitrate film), a nitrocellulose plastic closely related to—and often casually called—celluloid. This allowed for the capture and projection of moving images, bringing stories to life like never before.

Unfortunately, celluloid has a significant drawback: it's highly flammable. It ignites easily and burns rapidly, posing a serious fire hazard. Numerous fires in studios and archives were linked to improperly stored nitrate film. This danger eventually led to the development of safer alternatives like cellulose acetate (and later polyester) for filmmaking.

Today, while largely replaced by more stable plastics, celluloid remains an important piece of technological and cultural history. It's a reminder of innovation, risk, and the constant search for better materials.
