The word "castor" is a fascinating linguistic multi-tasker with roots in both botany and zoology. Its most frequent modern application is the "castor" (or caster)—the ingenious swivel wheel that gives furniture its mobility. Whether on an office chair or a hospital bed, these small rollers are essential for modern convenience.

Beyond hardware, the term is tied to the Ricinus communis plant, often called the castor oil plant, and its seeds (commonly—but not quite accurately—called “beans”). The oil extracted from these seeds is rich in ricinoleic acid and boasts an incredible range of uses.
