The word caste refers to a rigid social hierarchy in which people are divided into distinct groups based on birth. This system traditionally dictates a person's status, social interactions, and even their professional life. It is a concept deeply rooted in history and is most famously associated with the Indian subcontinent, though similar structures of social exclusion have existed in various cultures globally. Unlike a "class" system, which allows for social mobility through effort or wealth, a caste system is historically "closed," offering almost no opportunity for an individual to change their social standing.

Historically, these groups—often described in South Asia through concepts such as varna (broad social categories) and jati (birth groups)—were frequently reinforced by religious doctrines and long-standing customs. A person born into a specific caste was expected to adhere to that group's traditions and trades for life. This structure often resulted in systemic inequality, where those in lower castes were denied access to education, land, and political power.

While many modern nations have passed laws to abolish caste-based discrimination, its impact often persists through economic disparities and social prejudices. Beyond its historical and literal meaning, the term is also used metaphorically to describe any rigid or unfair social division. For instance, you might hear a critic describe an "academic caste system," where graduates from prestigious universities receive exclusive opportunities regardless of their actual merit. Ultimately, caste describes a deeply ingrained system of social order that restricts opportunity based on birthright, shaping the destiny of individuals before they are even born.

In a very different context, especially in biology, caste can also refer to specialized groups within a social species—such as the worker, soldier, and reproductive castes of ants, bees, or termites—where individuals have distinct roles within the colony.
