Camber refers to a slight outward or upward curvature, commonly found in construction, road design, and mechanical engineering. It isn't a sharp bend, but an intentional, measured deviation from straight or flat. Think of a long beam or bridge girder that’s built with a gentle upward curve so it settles closer to level once it’s under load—that planned “lift” is camber.

In civil engineering, camber (often called a "crown") is the slope provided to a road surface. By making the center higher than the edges, engineers ensure that water drains away, preventing dangerous hydroplaning and structural water damage.

In the automotive world, camber describes the vertical angle of the wheels relative to the road when viewed from the front. If the tops of the wheels tilt outward, it's "positive camber"; if they tilt inward toward the chassis, it's "negative camber." Performance and racing cars often use some negative camber to improve tire grip during high-speed turns, though too much can reduce straight-line contact and cause uneven tire wear. Similarly, in aeronautics, camber refers to the curvature of an aircraft wing’s cross-section (its airfoil shape). More camber generally helps a wing generate lift more easily, especially at lower speeds.

In workshops and building sites, you might also hear the word used more generally for any piece that has been intentionally given that slight curve. Today, whether you are looking at an elegant bridge, a road surface, or an airplane wing, camber represents a calculated curve designed for strength, stability, and efficiency. It's a subtle detail that makes a world of difference!
