A bunion is a bony protrusion that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. Technically known as hallux valgus, it represents a misalignment of the first metatarsal bone (the long bone in your foot) and the proximal phalanx (the bone in your toe). This structural shift causes the big toe to lean inward toward the smaller toes, which forces the joint at the base to jut outward, creating a visible bulge on the side of the foot.

While often associated with the natural changes of aging, bunions can develop at any time, even during adolescence. They are frequently caused by inherited biomechanical factors—meaning you might be predisposed to them based on the unique structure of your feet. However, external factors like wearing shoes that squeeze the toes (such as high heels or pointed-toe footwear) can significantly contribute to their development and aggravate existing symptoms.

Symptoms range from no discomfort at all to persistent aching, redness, swelling, or a limited range of motion in the big toe. Severe bunions can impair mobility and may require medical intervention such as orthotics (specialized shoe inserts), physical therapy, or even surgery to realign the joint and relieve pressure. Historically, many believed bunions were caused solely by ill-fitting shoes, and while that theory still holds weight, we now understand that bone structure and genetics are equally critical factors.
