A bulkhead is an internal wall or partition inside a larger structure. In ships, these walls are usually strong and often watertight, so if the hull is breached they can isolate a damaged section and slow flooding. In aircraft and other vehicles, bulkheads also support structural integrity, and in some designs they help with fire or pressure separation. In buildings, the term can also describe a partition-like wall built for fire separation, sound control, or to conceal services in a ceiling space. You might hear the term when someone says a crew member “breached a bulkhead” in a nautical drama, or a mechanic mentioned checking a wing bulkhead for structural wear. While you’d rarely use it for a simple home interior wall, the core idea stays the same: a robust internal divider that improves safety, strength, and compartmentalization.
