The word "blight" originally described a plant disease—a rapid and widespread decay that could devastate crops, most famously the potato blight in Ireland which led to famine. Today, however, "blight" has expanded beyond agriculture to describe anything that causes harm, ruin, or gradual deterioration. It suggests something insidious, spreading slowly and damaging what was once healthy or promising.

You might hear about "an urban blight," referring to the decay of city neighborhoods through neglect and abandonment. Or perhaps someone's character is described as having a "moral blight," meaning they have a flaw that corrupts their goodness. A blight can be physical, like a disease affecting trees, or abstract, like a negative influence on society.

The key element of "blight" is its destructive progression. It's not an immediate catastrophe, but rather something that slowly eats away at the vitality and health of whatever it affects. A blight isn't just damage; it's a process of decline.

For example: "The factory closure cast a blight over the entire town," or "His reputation suffered a terrible blight after the scandal." Even in literature, you might find characters whose lives are blighted by tragedy or misfortune. Whether it's crops, communities, or character, a blight is something that threatens to ruin and decay from within.
