You might hear someone say they "grew up on the blacktop," usually meaning they spent their childhood in and around these asphalt spaces.

"Blacktop" is an informal term for asphalt concrete: mineral aggregate bound with bitumen, a sticky binder, to make a durable paving material. Asphalt is typically chosen for roads, parking lots, and driveways because it is flexible and relatively inexpensive. The term likely began as a description for roads “topped” with a bituminous seal over a prepared base, giving surfaces their dark color. In everyday speech it has widened to cover many paved places built from this material, from city streets and suburban roadways to school grounds and parking areas.
