Tar is a dark, viscous substance traditionally derived from the destructive distillation of organic matter like wood or coal. Historically, this "pine tar" was the lifeblood of the maritime industry; ancient sailors used it to caulk the seams of wooden ships and preserve rope against the harsh salt spray. This connection was so strong that sailors themselves earned the nickname "Jack Tars" (or simply "tars"), a term still found in classic literature today.

In modern times, the word is often loosely used for black road-surfacing materials, especially in everyday speech, though true tar is not the same thing as asphalt or bitumen. You can likely recall the distinct, heavy scent of a road being paved, and many people casually call that "tar."
