billionth

B2
nounadjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /bˈɪliənθ/

US

  • /ˈbɪljənθ/

Description

Imagine counting every second as it ticks by; to reach a billion, you would have to count for over thirty-one years. That final tick at the very end of your journey would be the 1,000,000,000th second. The term "billionth" is often the exact position in a huge ordered list, like a company’s one billionth customer or a video’s one billionth view, where it spotlights a very specific point in an enormous total. It can also mean a tiny part: one billionth of a second, or one billionth of a gram. In both cases, it captures either the scale of something massive or the minuteness of a single unit.

Examples

  1. 1

    Milestone user

The app welcomed its billionth user this morning.

  2. 2

    Tiny time unit

The new chip can respond in a billionth of a second.

  3. 3

    Scientific measurement

Even a billionth of a gram can change the result of the test.
