A beard is, quite simply, hair grown on the chin, cheeks, and neck. But its story goes far beyond just facial fuzz! Throughout history, beards have often served as strong symbols. In ancient Egypt, high-ranking men and women sometimes wore false beards to project divinity or authority. Vikings were known for long, braided beards, often described as emblems of strength and boldness. At different moments in European history, beards fell out of fashion and were mocked as wild or unruly, then returned in other periods as signs of masculinity, rebellion, or professionalism.

Today, beards are largely a matter of personal style. You might describe a beard as "full," "trimmed," or "scruffy." The process of growing one is often called "cultivating" it, implying patience and regular grooming. We talk about beard oil to keep the hair soft, and beard balm to style and hold it.

Figuratively, the term "beard" has a niche meaning in which it can refer to a person used as a cover to hide another person’s situation or intentions. But most of the time, when we talk about a beard, we mean the hair on someone’s face.
