A baronetcy is a hereditary title in the British honours system. It is not a peerage, and therefore it does not carry a seat in the House of Lords like a baron would. It sits above ordinary knighthood and is passed down through a family line, traditionally to the male heir unless the original patent says otherwise. The holder uses the title "Sir" and the rank remains attached to the family. Historically, many early baronetcies were created to raise money for the Crown, especially during colonial ventures, and later ones were awarded more often for public service or military distinction. In social terms, it is the highest hereditary rank that is still outside the peerage.
A baronetcy is a hereditary honour in the UK, first established under King James I in 1611. It occupies a distinctive place in the order of precedence: it is a rank below a barony (the lowest grade of the peerage) but above a knighthood. Unlike knighthood, which is a personal honour that does not pass on at death, a baronetcy is inherited and may continue across generations, usually through the eldest male heir or another heir specified in the creation.
The title was initially created to raise Crown revenue, especially for projects such as the plantation of Ulster and later undertakings in Nova Scotia. Early baronetcies were sometimes sold to affluent gentry and merchants seeking status, while many later creations rewarded public service, military merit, or civic contribution.
A baronet is addressed as "Sir [First Name] [Last Name], Bt." (Bt. for baronet). Baronets are legally commoners rather than peers, which is why the title does not give automatic rights to sit in the House of Lords. The family rank remains attached to the title, though a baronetcy can become dormant or extinct if no eligible heir exists.
The wife of a baronet is traditionally styled as "Lady [Surname]," and the term baronetage refers to the whole body of baronets. In older references, families "losing their baronetcy" usually means an heir line has ended, so the creation can no longer continue.
