But the word can also have a local twist: in New Orleans, "banquette" can mean a raised sidewalk or curb-side walkway. So depending on where you are, you might either be sitting on one over tea or strolling along one to get to the café.

Its most common modern use is a built-in bench or long upholstered seat fixed to a wall.
