Autolysis (from the Greek auto- meaning "self" and lysis meaning "breaking apart") is the process in which a cell or tissue breaks down using its own enzymes. In forensic and medical contexts, it is best known as an early post-mortem event: after death, lysosomal enzymes are released and digest cellular components, contributing to decomposition.
Autolysis can also be relevant in life, especially where controlled local breakdown helps remodel tissues. You may see it discussed in developmental changes such as tadpole tail resorption, but it usually occurs alongside broader regulated pathways of cell removal. For this reason, it is related to, but distinct from, processes like apoptosis and autophagy.
In practical use, controlled autolysis is also discussed in food science, where endogenous enzymes are allowed to soften tissue over time, such as in meat aging. In forensic science, the extent of autolysis is one clue among several for estimating time since death.
