Imagine a plant leaf turning brown and brittle. That gives you a simple picture of what happens when part of living tissue dies because it has been badly damaged. Think of it as accidental cell death. Unlike the body's normal way of removing old or unwanted cells, this happens because the tissue has been hurt beyond repair. Necrosis is the death of cells or tissue in a living body, usually caused by serious damage such as injury, infection, toxins, burns, extreme cold, or loss of blood supply. Unlike apoptosis (programmed cell death), necrosis is not a neat, controlled process. The damaged cells break apart, release their contents, and often trigger inflammation in the surrounding tissue.

For instance, a heart attack can lead to myocardial necrosis, which means death of heart muscle tissue after a sudden lack of oxygen. Severe frostbite can cause skin necrosis because extreme cold destroys the tissue. People with diabetes may also face a higher risk of foot necrosis if poor circulation and nerve damage allow small injuries or infections to get worse.
The appearance of necrotic tissue varies depending on the cause and location. It may appear pale, mottled, or even greenish-black. Sometimes the area becomes dry and brittle (dry gangrene), while other times it becomes soft and oozing (wet gangrene). Doctors typically diagnose necrosis through physical examinations, imaging tests like MRIs or CT scans, and occasionally biopsies to determine the extent of the damage.
While tiny areas of necrosis can often be managed by the body's natural healing and scarring processes, larger areas can be life-threatening. Treatment depends on the severity but often involves removing the dead tissue (a process called debridement), administering antibiotics to prevent the spread of infection, or performing surgery to restore blood flow to the affected area. Ultimately, necrosis represents a breakdown of living tissue that can range from a minor localized complication to a major medical emergency.
