A common point of confusion arises in electroplating. In this process, the anode is not the object being coated (like a car bumper); rather, the anode is usually the piece of source metal (like chrome or gold) that dissolves to provide the coating material. The object receiving the coating is actually the cathode. Understanding the anode means looking past the voltage sign and focusing on the rule: oxidation happens at the anode.
