Annexation is the formal act of adding territory to an existing political entity—whether it’s a country, state, or even a city. It’s more than just taking over land; it implies incorporating that territory into the legal and administrative framework of the annexing power.

Historically, annexation was often achieved through military conquest. Think of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014—a controversial act widely condemned internationally. Annexation can also happen through legislation or treaties, but whether it’s seen as legitimate often depends on consent and recognition. The U.S. annexed Hawaii in 1898 after years of economic and political pressure, and the circumstances remain heavily debated.

In local government, annexation refers to when a city expands its boundaries by incorporating surrounding unincorporated areas or even other towns. This can be done for various reasons: to increase the tax base, provide services to more residents, or simply to expand the city’s influence.

The word itself comes from the Latin annexare, meaning “to fasten to.” It carries a sense of permanence—once annexed, the territory becomes legally and politically part of the annexing entity. So, whether it’s empires expanding their reach or cities growing outward, annexation is about adding land and integrating it into something larger.
