To anesthetize means to block sensation—especially pain—usually by giving an anesthetic drug, but it can also be used metaphorically for emotional numbness. Primarily, it's a medical term meaning to induce anesthesia so a person doesn't feel pain during surgery or other procedures. This can be done in different ways: local anesthetics numb a specific area (like a tooth) while the person stays awake, while general anesthetics can render a person unconscious.
