The term "aileron" is French for "little wing." Ailerons became standard in the early 20th century as aviation advanced beyond simple designs. Before the invention of ailerons, pilots often used "wing warping"—literally twisting the entire wing structure with cables—to achieve roll control. This was physically demanding and less precise than using hinged surfaces.
While standard on almost all fixed-wing aircraft, including gliders, the mechanism is absent in other types of aircraft. You won't find ailerons on helicopters, for instance; they use cyclic pitch control to tilt the main rotor disc. Outside aviation, you may occasionally see aileron used (especially in translated contexts) for a small fin or spoiler on a vehicle, but the aircraft meaning is the standard one.
