An aileron is a hinged control surface located on the trailing edge of an airplane's wing. It is one of the three primary flight controls—along with the rudder and elevator—that allow pilots to maneuver the aircraft. While often confused with "flaps" by non-pilots, ailerons are specifically crucial for controlling roll, which is the tilting motion around the plane's longitudinal axis.

Here is how they work: Ailerons operate in opposing pairs. When the pilot moves the control stick or yoke to the right, the right aileron deflects upward while the left one deflects downward. This reduces lift on the right wing and increases it on the left, causing the aircraft to roll to the right. The opposite occurs when the pilot moves the controls to the left.

In real flight, that downward-deflecting aileron usually creates a bit more drag as well, which can make the nose want to yaw the other way (a tendency called adverse yaw). That’s why pilots often coordinate aileron input with the rudder for clean, efficient turns.

The term "aileron" is French for "little wing." Ailerons became standard in the early 20th century as aviation advanced beyond simple designs. Before the invention of ailerons, pilots often used "wing warping"—literally twisting the entire wing structure with cables—to achieve roll control. This was physically demanding and less precise than using hinged surfaces.

While standard on almost all fixed-wing aircraft, including gliders, the mechanism is absent in other types of aircraft. You won't find ailerons on helicopters, for instance; they use cyclic pitch control to tilt the main rotor disc. Outside aviation, you may occasionally see aileron used (especially in translated contexts) for a small fin or spoiler on a vehicle, but the aircraft meaning is the standard one. So, the next time you see a plane gracefully banking toward the horizon, remember the humble aileron working tirelessly to make that smooth turn possible!
