The word "after" primarily marks what comes later in time or in a sequence. This is its most common usage: "She arrived after the meeting had already begun." It can introduce a noun ("after the meeting") or a clause ("after the meeting ended"), and it helps you place events in order.

However, "after" extends beyond just timing. It can describe position—following behind someone: "The detective walked after the suspect."
