Imagine you're on a sailing ship! "Aft" describes anything situated toward the back of the vessel—away from the front (the bow). Sailors use it constantly to give directions. "Move aft!" means go toward the stern (the very rear end). But "aft" isn't just for boats! It is also standard vocabulary in aviation. You will often hear flight attendants refer to the "aft galley" (the kitchen at the back of the plane). Think of it as nautical and technical shorthand for "behind."
Originally, "aft" was a purely nautical term derived from Old English roots relating to "after" or "behind." On a ship, the stern is the physical structure at the rear, but "aft" describes the direction or location toward that end. However, be careful not to overuse it! While you might occasionally hear it applied to the back of a vehicle (like a camper van or train), using "aft" to describe the back of a house, a room, or a car generally sounds unnatural or strangely formal. It is a word best kept for adventures on the high seas or at high altitudes.
