Adjacency describes the state of being next to or bordering something else. It's more than just nearness; it usually means things share a boundary or sit immediately beside each other. While "proximity" simply means closeness, adjacency emphasizes that "next-to" relationship in space or in an ordered sequence.

You'll often hear it used in geography and mapping: "The adjacency of the two countries led to frequent border disputes." It's also common in mathematics, particularly in graph theory where "adjacent vertices" share an edge. In urban planning, adjacency is crucial when considering how buildings and spaces interact with each other – a park adjacent to a residential area offers easy access for residents.

However, adjacency isn't limited to physical locations. It can describe relationships in time or sequence too: adjacent days, adjacent pages, or back-to-back events. For example, "The adjacency of these two events suggests a causal link." Here the point is that the events happened close together in time; adjacency alone doesn’t prove causation, but it can make a relationship worth investigating. In linguistics, it refers to elements appearing next to each other in a sentence or phrase.

So whether you're describing land formations, network connections, urban design, temporal relationships, or linguistic structures – adjacency highlights immediate nearness or “right next to” placement. It's about what's right there, touching or following closely after something else.
