Imagine your arms hanging at your sides. When you raise them out to the side like airplane wings, that's abduction—moving away from the body's midline. Now bring your arms back down and press them against your sides… that's adduction. To *adduct* (in anatomy) means to draw a body part toward the midline of the body or toward a central axis. It’s a term you’ll hear in anatomy, sports science, and physical therapy: you can adduct your thighs by squeezing your knees together, or a therapist might measure how well you can adduct your arm across your chest.
But *adduct has another common scientific life: in chemistry and biochemistry, an adduct is a compound formed when two molecules join together directly (an “addition product”), as in a Lewis acid–base adduct or a DNA adduct. So depending on the context, adduct* either names a movement toward the center (verb) or names the combined result of “adding together” two molecules (noun).
The word "adduct" comes from Latin roots meaning "to lead to" or "draw near." In modern English it shows up in two main technical senses: one in anatomy (a verb about movement) and one in chemistry (a noun for a combined product). The shared idea is “bringing toward” or “bringing together.”
In anatomical terms, to *adduct is to move a body part toward the body’s midline (or toward a reference axis). It’s the direct opposite of abduct (moving away* from the midline). Adducting “closes the gap” between a limb and the body. It’s not just about arms and legs: you can adduct your fingers by squeezing them together from a spread-out position. The verb also appears in speech and voice work: your vocal folds must adduct (come together) to vibrate and produce voiced sound; if they don’t adduct properly, your voice can become weak or absent.
In chemistry and biochemistry, an *adduct is the product formed when two substances combine by direct addition. You’ll see it in phrases like Lewis acid–base adduct (where an electron-pair donor and acceptor form a single associated complex) and DNA adduct (where a chemical binds to DNA, often discussed in toxicology and cancer research). In this sense, adduct* is mostly a noun (“they detected an adduct”), though scientists may also use it as a verb informally (“the reagent forms an adduct with the molecule”).
So, while you probably won’t use "adduct" in everyday conversation, it’s a precision word in science: in anatomy it’s movement toward the midline, and in chemistry it’s a “brought-together” compound formed by addition.
