It's more than just a strong habit; addiction involves compulsive engagement in a behavior despite negative consequences for themselves and those around them. Historically, "addict" came from the Latin word addicere, meaning "to deliver up," suggesting someone has surrendered control to something else.

Addiction can take many forms. We often think of substance use disorders—alcoholism, opioid addiction, nicotine dependence—where the body can crave a chemical substance and withdrawal can be intense. People also talk about “behavioral addictions,” especially gambling; other labels (like “internet addiction,” “sex addiction,” or “food addiction”) are common in everyday speech but can be more debated in clinical settings. Whether the trigger is a drug or a behavior, the pattern is similar: preoccupation, cravings, repeated attempts to quit followed by relapse, and continued use despite real harm.

The word "addict" can be sensitive because it reduces a person to a label; many people prefer person-first language ("a person with a substance use disorder") to avoid stigma. Still, "addict" is common in everyday conversation and in discussions about addiction more broadly. In either case, the idea isn’t “weak willpower,” but a complex tangle of biology, environment, stress, and learned reward patterns.

In casual, non-medical use, "addict" can also mean a devoted enthusiast (“a sports addict,” “a book addict”), where it signals obsession more than clinical dependence. And as a verb, to addict (someone) to means to cause them to become dependent on something, though that use is less common today.

So, whether referring to a substance problem, a compulsive pattern, or a figurative obsession, an addict is someone whose life has become dominated by a pull they can’t easily break free from—a powerful and sometimes heartbreaking struggle for control.
