Imagine squeezing a lemon into a glass of water. You've just changed the water's chemistry—that’s acidification in action. To acidify something is to make it more acidic, increasing its acidity (lowering its pH). It doesn't always mean adding acid directly; sometimes it happens naturally. Rainwater, for example, can acidify soils and lakes. You might also hear about ocean acidification, which is a big concern because it harms marine life. Think of ceviche: citrus juice acidifies the fish and “cooks” it by changing its proteins.

To acidify means to increase the acidity of something—making it more like an acid and less alkaline (or basic). While we often think of acids as harsh chemicals, acidification is a natural process that happens all around us.

Think about carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. When CO2 dissolves in water—like rainwater or ocean water—it forms carbonic acid, acidifying the water. This is why scientists are so concerned about rising CO2 levels and their impact on ocean ecosystems. Acidification can harm shellfish, coral reefs, and other marine life.

But acidification isn't always a large-scale environmental issue. It can also happen in smaller contexts. For example, bacteria in your mouth acidify the surface of your teeth, which can lead to cavities. In cooking, you might intentionally acidify marinades with ingredients like vinegar or lemon juice to tenderize meat or enhance flavors.

The word comes from "acid" and the suffix "-ify," meaning "to make." So, to acidify is essentially to make acidic. It's a process that can be slow and subtle, or rapid and dramatic—but it always involves an increase in acidity. Whether it's the ocean, your teeth, or a delicious marinade, acidification plays a role in many aspects of our world.
