The word "abuse" carries a heavy weight. At its core, it means to treat someone cruelly or to use something improperly or harmfully. It is often associated with inflicting physical or emotional pain on another person, but its meaning extends far beyond that.

You might hear about physical abuse, involving hitting, kicking, or other forms of violence. But there is also emotional abuse, where someone uses words and actions to control, manipulate, or undermine another's self-worth. Verbal abuse involves yelling, insults, and threats. Financial abuse occurs when someone controls another person's access to money. Furthermore, substances can be abused—meaning drugs or alcohol are used in a way that is harmful or addictive.

The context of "abuse" frequently implies a power imbalance. A bully might abuse a weaker classmate. An employer could abuse their position by demanding unreasonable hours or denying fair wages. A government official might abuse their authority for personal gain.

The idea of "making bad use of" extends to abstract concepts as well. You could say someone abused a privilege if they took advantage of it irresponsibly. For example: "He abused his access to confidential information."

Finally, abuse can refer to rude, insulting language itself. You might hear it as a noun ("She shouted abuse at the referee") or as a verb ("He abused the staff").
