The word "ablate" comes from Latin ablatus (“carried away”). Today, it describes the act of removing or wearing away material from the surface of something—literally carrying it away from the original object. This isn't necessarily a sudden event; the process is often gradual and layered, like a glacier ablating over a warm season.

In science and engineering, ablation often involves intense heat. The sun's radiation ablates ice on comets, helping create their characteristic tails. Spacecraft heat shields are also designed for controlled ablation—their surface chars and peels away under extreme heating so the interior stays protected. In manufacturing, you may see "laser ablation," where a focused beam removes material from a target.

In medicine, "ablation" refers to procedures that intentionally remove or destroy tissue.
