Zidovudine, commonly known as AZT, is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI)—a mouthful, but it describes exactly how the drug works! Think of HIV needing to copy itself inside your cells to spread. It does this using an enzyme called reverse transcriptase. Zidovudine acts like a faulty building block; it gets incorporated into the new viral DNA and stops the copying process in its tracks.
