In English, "yuan" usually means the main unit of the Chinese currency. The official name of the currency is the renminbi, often shortened to RMB, and the yuan is the unit people use when talking about prices. If a meal costs 35 yuan, or if a report discusses the yuan-to-dollar exchange rate, this is the meaning being used. It is one of the world’s best-known currency words because China plays such a large role in trade, manufacturing, travel, and finance.

In everyday use, the word appears in news reports, business writing, travel guides, and conversations about exchange rates. It works much like words such as "dollar," "euro," or "pound": it names a money unit rather than the whole economy by itself. The smaller units are jiao and fen, though in normal modern use, prices are most often discussed in yuan.
