The word yeshiva comes from the Hebrew verb yashav, meaning "to sit." Today, it refers to a Jewish educational institution devoted mainly to the study of traditional religious texts, especially the Talmud, Torah, and other rabbinic writings. The idea behind the name is tied to the long tradition of students sitting together to learn, debate, and listen to teachers.

While many Jewish schools include general subjects along with religion, a yeshiva usually suggests a stronger focus on sacred learning, often in a serious and structured setting. It is not simply about learning about Judaism; it is about entering the texts themselves and working through them in detail.

There are several kinds of yeshivot. Some are meant for teenagers, and others are for older students continuing advanced study. Some follow a Litvish style, which stresses close, analytical study of the Talmud. Others are Chassidish and place more visible weight on Hasidic spiritual life and tradition. In many places, study is done through chavruta, a partner-based method in which two students read, question, and challenge each other as they learn.

The term can also point more broadly to the world around the school: its students, teachers, daily routine, and religious culture. You might hear about someone spending a year "in yeshiva," about yeshiva students joining a community event, or about families choosing a certain yeshiva for its religious outlook. So the word often means more than just a school building. It can suggest a whole community centered on study, prayer, discipline, and Jewish tradition.
