The yarmulke, also known as a kippah, is a small skullcap worn as a sign of Jewish identity, respect, and awareness of God. For many people, covering the head is a religious custom tied to prayer, study, and daily life. The exact reasons and rules can differ by community, but the basic idea is that it shows humility and reverence.

Historically, head covering in Jewish life has taken different forms, and customs around the yarmulke have changed over time. In some times and places, it was worn mainly during prayer or study. In others, especially in more observant communities, many men came to wear it throughout the day as a regular practice. Today, customs still vary widely across Judaism.

Some Conservative, Reform, and other Jewish communities also wear kippot, and in some of them women do as well. Knitted kippot are common in some communities, while black cloth or velvet ones are common in others.
