Description

Imagine a sculptor with a block of marble: that marble is the piece being worked on. A workpiece is the raw material or partly finished part that someone is shaping, changing, or putting together. It is not a finished product yet. You will hear this term most often in workshops, factories, and craft settings where things are being made. A carpenter might use it for a piece of wood before it becomes a chair leg, and a machinist might use it for metal being shaped on a lathe.

Examples
