Imagine an old wooden chest, lovingly crafted generations ago. Now picture tiny tunnels crisscrossing within the wood, almost invisible to the naked eye. That is the work of woodworm: not worms at all, but the larvae of various beetle species, such as the common furniture beetle or the deathwatch beetle. These little creatures burrow into the wood to feed and grow, creating a network of passages that weakens the timber over time.

You might first notice woodworm by the presence of tiny "flight holes", small round exit points where adult beetles emerge. These are often accompanied by fine, powdery dust called "frass" and can be clear signs of an infestation. Woodworm is especially common in damp or poorly protected timber, though it is often noticed in old buildings, beams, and furniture.

Historically, woodworm was a common problem in older buildings and furniture, often seen as an unavoidable part of owning antique items. Today, various treatments are available to stop infestations and protect wooden structures for the future. However, the term "woodworm" remains a familiar, general name for this persistent pest.
